From a visit to staying forever: the foreign influencers who traded their passport for the heart of Colombia

There's a popular saying here that warns: "El riesgo es que te quieras quedar" — the risk is that you'll want to stay. And it's no empty talk. Although it was born as a tourism slogan, for many international content creators it became a literal prophecy. They arrived with a light suitcase, planning to stay a couple of weeks to take pretty pictures and shoot a few reels, but ended up postponing their return flight indefinitely. Today, those same foreigners say "parce," eat calentao for breakfast, and cure their hangover — the "guayabo" — with a good caldo de costilla.

What is it about this land that makes someone leave the comfort of their home country to put down roots here?

The "Colombia effect": when content becomes home

For a travel creator, the world is full of instagrammable places. But what sets Colombia apart from other global destinations isn't just the lushness of the Cocora Valley or the white-sand beaches of Tayrona National Park. It's the people. That human warmth that greets you with a "tinto" (black coffee) in hand and makes you feel like family five minutes after meeting you.

Many of these influencers came looking for landscapes and ran into a warmth that disarmed them. At first, their videos showed typical tourist wonder: the first taste of a lulada, the culture shock of discovering we put cheese in our hot chocolate, or the (often failed) attempt to dance salsa in Cali.

But the chip flips when the trip stops being a script. The content starts to transform. They no longer film from the observer's fence; now they film themselves grocery shopping at Paloquemao market, debating with humor over which bandeja paisa is the best in town, or explaining — with a love that gives you goosebumps — why you shouldn't "dar papaya" (make yourself an easy target) but you should absolutely enjoy life without so much hurry.

From foreign accent to "voseo" and "parce"

It's amazing how the accent rubs off on them. You've surely come across those TikTok or Instagram videos where a German, an American, or a French woman speaks Spanish with a perfectly rolo, paisa, or costeño cadence. They don't do it for clicks; it comes from the soul, because they live our culture day in and day out.

Adopting the slang

Watching a foreigner drop an "¡Ay, qué pecao!" or a "¡Qué chimba!" with the exact intonation is the ultimate proof of their voluntary adoption.

The vallenato test

You know an international creator has become more Colombian than the arepa when they don't just breathe our culture but know the classics of Diomedes Díaz or Carlos Vives by heart and belt them out at a party.

The real reason behind putting down roots

Let's be honest: Colombia has its complexities, like any country. But those who decide to live here, build their digital businesses, and pay taxes in this corner of South America do it because they find an emotional quality of life that no longer exists in their hyper-developed countries. Here they discover that life is lived in community, that the neighbor greets you by name, and that happiness is found in the simplest plans — hanging out on a corner with a cold "pola" (beer) as the afternoon fades.

They fell in love with the diversity that defines us. In a single week they can go from Bogotá's páramo chill to Medellín's flavorful warmth, or lose themselves in the mystical magic of the Amazon. For a creative mind, Colombia is an infinite canvas that never runs dry.

At the end of the day, nationality isn't just the paper that says where you were born, but the place you choose to be happy. These content creators came to show Colombia to the world, and ended up showing us how lucky we are to live in this paradise.

Who's your favorite foreign influencer who already feels more Colombian than you? Who else should have made this club?
